Goals/Wishes for 2014

I decided to take a quick break from massive amounts of housework and go ahead and type up my Goals and Wishes for 2014.  As with last year's post, I decided to make some concrete goals and wishes instead of resolutions. 

Health/Fitness/Weight loss:
  • Goal - Log every bite, every single day in My Fitness Pal
  • Goal - PORTION CONTROL.  I've got to do better with this and get back to measuring
  • Goal - Water, water, water!  At least 60oz. or more every single day.
  • Wish - Continue with no soda throughout 2014
  • Wish - 40 pound loss and single digits in pant size
  • Goal - Work out 5x per week
  • Wish - A streak of working out 5x per week for the whole year (that one may be lofty)
  • Goal - Run 6 - 5K races  (foot issues pending, this may be out)
  • Wish - Run a 5K once per month and one 10K
  • Goal - Yoga at least twice per week; weight training three times per week
  • Wish - Actually start and finish Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred
  • Goal - Get better at tennis and play on a league (foot issues pending)
  • Wish - Advance out of beginner level 2.5 in Tennis 
  • Wish - Fit in 2 new tshirts that I bought for Comic Con that are slightly snug on me now.  
  • Wish - Daryl (Norman Reedus), Desiree' and Merle (Michael Rooker) Sandwich pic with me in the Walking Dixons t-shirt (mentioned above)
  • Wish - Pic with Alan Tudyk in the new Serenity t-shirt (mentioned above)
Blogging:
  • Goal - Blog at least 5 times per month
Personal:
  • Goal - Eliminate as much debt as possible
  • Goal - Read at least one book per month
 So that's all I can think of for now.

Weekly/Weekend roundup

Hidey Ho everyone!

Not gonna lie, it felt REALLY good to be back on track again.  I'm super excited that December is almost completely out of here.  I'm ready to move onto a new year and to put this month behind us.


Sunday - rest
Monday - 60 minutes or so worth of bowling (not pictured above)
Tuesday - 50 minutes elliptical
Wednesday - Christmas - nada
Thursday - 20 minutes yoga; 60 minutes elliptical
Friday - 60 minutes of torture Physical Therapy (not pictured above)
Saturday - 45 minutes elliptical; 30 minutes (3 reps on about 8 different weight machines focusing on arms)

I started realsies Physical Torture Therapy last Friday and go twice a week (tomorrow and then again next Friday and so on until they tell me not to come anymore).  She started me off with a 10 minute warm up on the elliptical and I'm thinking to myself, ok this is awesome!  Piece of cake!  The elliptical is my thang!  That was probably the last good moment I had during the whole session. 

Next, she had me get up on the table, where she then had to work all those kinks out of my feet and massage the areas with the worst Plantar Faciitis.   I am not a foot person and I don't like that sort of thing.  It makes for an awkward experience let me tell you.  The torturer therapist thought that she was hurting me because I kept flinching, but that was just me being freaked out by another human being touching my footsies.  After that, more stretching and foot stretches and that wasn't too bad.  But then came the resistance band.  Oh the humanity!  I had to stay in squat position and walk side to side for 2 minutes...twice.  Then Wide steps forward and backwards for 2 minutes....twice again.  My thighs were BURNING after this, which tells me that I really need to work on squats/core all that stuff. 

But the very next thing was the absolute worst of all.   I have horrible, horrible balance issues.  And I have since I developed the blood clots/DVT's in 2008.  I pretty much can walk down a hallway at work and still veer into walls.  If I ever got pulled over and was forced to take a sobriety test, let me just say it wouldn't be pretty even if I was stone cold sober.  So, she had me get on this balance ball thingy with a piece of wood on top on one leg and try to move my foot front to back.  Twice.  And then side to side.  Twice.  For 2 minutes.  Longest. 2. Minutes. Ever.  By the end my legs were shaking so badly she took pity on my and let me cut each leg short timewise. 

Lastly she had me do 3 sets of planks.  I did worse than when I did it on my own at home.  I think the first was around 7 seconds, then 9 and then back to 8.  Can you regress with planks?  Geez, it was awful!  But maybe I was still shaky from the whole balance fiasco.

So I get to do this all over again tomorrow!  (Wonder if I should take a Xanax before I go?)  Hmm.

Saturday it was rainy and yucky but I still managed to go with my mom to the gym.  I got another Doctor Who ep watched (Not enough Rory in that episode!)  and then did a killer arm workout.  After that, went home, showered and went to the grocery store.  Then decided to meet up with my mom and my aunt again and we went and saw Saving Mr. Banks!   (It was really good!) 

Sunday was supposed to be laundry and clean the house in my jammies day, but it turned into holy-crap-how-is-it-that-we-have-never-ever-discovered-Minecraft day!  Yea, after we started on that, the next thing Chris and I knew it was 10pm.  It's like the crafting part of World of Warcraft and the Sims had an 8-bit baby!  I sooooo cannot wait to build a Millenium Falcon or a Serenity!

But first, laundry and the house have to get cleaned!  So that's the plan for tonight after work and then some yoga.  Then maybe some Minecraft.  I have off tomorrow and Wednesday for New Years and we are hoping to have just a low key next few days.  We are still binge watching Arrow so there is that, too.  We may go out to eat with the Parental Units at some point but that may be the only highlight of the Holiday (that and the LSU game)!  Just the way I like it!

I found this video of Oz this morning while trying to clean out my cellphone.  I think I was just starting my weight loss journey when this was taken.  Oz is seriously the craziest cat!

So glad it's the weekend!

Morning everyone! 

I'm sitting here and enjoying a nice hot cup of coffee.  It's yucky, cold and raining here in South Louisiana so the coffee is definitely hitting the right spot!

I'm feeling so much better now that Christmas is over with.  I feel like I'm starting to get back on track with not only logging my food but hitting the gym.  I'm definitely missing tennis and actually missing running too, believe it or not.  (I have such a love/hate thing going with running!)  But, the elliptical is working out very nice especially being able to be indoors in such yucky weather - that and being able to watch Doctor Who helps too!

On a sad note, my Fitbit flex band bit the dust, so Chris and I went and picked up some more bands at Best Buy.  But, the plastic clasp on these extra bands is turning out to be a piece of crap.   See that little sticky-outy part there? Yea, when that breaks, the whole clasp is done for.  I'm on my 2nd plastic broken clasp and only have one intact one left after this.  I'm thinking of writing a sternly worded letter to Fitbit about this.  If you have the Flex and have the extra bands, have you guys had any problems like this? 


Hmm this post sorta has been all over the place!  Sorry about that!   Guess I do need to wrap this post up.  Gonna try to pry hubby off the Playstation for a bit for us to get the groceries knocked out. I already hit the gym this morning and I'm ready to get showered and change into my jammies already and it's not even 12:00 noon yet!  But shower then groceries first.  Then jammies!  :)

2013 in review

If you ever want to give yourself a laugh, be sure to look at the prior years resolutions!   I know for me it's sorta laughable.

So, how did I do?  Let's break them down....

Health and Weight Loss
  • GOAL: Track every thing I eat and exercise in My Fitness Pal for 365 days  (Technically, this is a win, I did hit my streak of 365 days, but around the 390 mark it all went to shit.  I didn't "officially" run the Jan 1st to Jan 1st goal though) I'll give myself 1/2 point here.
  • WISH: To lose 70 pounds this year  (HA!  What was I thinking?!  I did lose 50 or so, but that's from the beginning.  My first January weigh in was 225.6.  My last December weigh in, last week was 195.0.  30.6 pound total.  Which isn't bad, but no where near where I was hoping.  I admit that 70 at the time would have put me at my goal weight and honestly, that was aiming just a wee bit high.  No points for Desiree' here.
Fitness

  • GOAL: Finish C25K and continue to run at least 3 times per week  1/2 point because I did finish C25K but various injuries and other life crap put the kaboosh on consecutive running.
  • WISH: To run at least 4-5 5K’s this year  (5K #1 , 5K #2 , 5K #3) I would have hit that had I not had the Achilles pull for the Zoo Zoom
Blogging and such

  • GOAL: Post at least 5 times per month.  It really helps keep me honest and accountable Aha!  Finally a goal that I managed to nail!  The lowest post count month was June and that was only 7 blog posts!  A Point and a virtual cookie for me!
Personal
  • GOAL: Eliminate as much debt as possible  If by debt, you mean, get more, then we won!!  Thanks to the stupid fridge breaking.  Ok so this may not have completely gone our way this year, but we do have a pretty accurate handle on things now.  Hoping that next year will be much better in paying of debt!
  • GOAL: Read at least one book per month.  (I go through phases where I read vicariously for a month or two and then go several months without reading something.   I want to do better with this.)  Womp womp.   A nice total of only 5 books was read last year according to goodreads.  0 points. 
So, my last year wishes/goals didn't quite go my way but I wouldn't call 2013 a major disaster!  I did happen upon some pretty major milestones throughout the year!

ONEderland!!!!!  and 50 pounds gone milestone!

I may not have hit all my goals, but I'm pretty damn proud of all that I did manage to accomplish!  I've learned a whole lot about myself throughout the year also!  I am so much stronger than I ever believed and not just physically but mentally as well.  I've fought off laziness, my very own blerch, mental walls and come out the victor.

A Fresh Start

Maybe the streak-fail on My Fitness Pal happened for a reason. 

I've been thinking about it a lot lately anyway.  The scale hasn't really moved in a long time and I know that bad habits have started creeping back in, not to mention with the holidays and the whole shebang there.  So I figured that I would give myself a last "hurrah" of sorts on Christmas but back at it 100% starting today.  I'm paying for that last hurrah today too, in that I have an awful tummy ache.  Too much bad food, alcohol and then top it all off with Chinese food at 8pm last night.  Blerg.

I have 6 weeks and 1 day now until Comic Con.  In those 6 weeks I'm gonna focus on really getting back on track and also introducing some new things into the mix.  I want to shake things up a bit and hopefully hit my 60 pound loss mark by then.

In my post-Christmas, alcohol-fueled, Chinese food frenzy, I weighed in this morning at 195.  Yep.  I said 195.  There is no typo.  I'm owning up to it.  I have gained 7 pounds since Thanksgiving.   Now, at least 2 pounds of it is hopefully sodium and 2 margaritas and 2 Stella Artois's worth of padding.  But even still it's bad enough.

So no more!

Here's my plan of attack.  But first, the good, the bad and the ugly according to my Orthopedic Doctor and the Physical Therapist.   The good - I can use the elliptical til my heart is content.  The bad - no more running - or walking as exercise.  The ugly - no more tennis.   (At least, until I can get properly fitted and assessed for new shoes for both running and tennis).  I almost ugly cried about the tennis part.  And since Christmas was, um, a bit overboard, I may have to wait a bit until I can get new shoes.  So until then, the elliptical will be my bff.

The Plan:
  • Stretch - every damn day.  I have to do those P.T. approved stretches for my feet.  While at work and sitting at my desk, I can use a tennis ball to roll around, sort of like a foam roller but for Plantar Facitiis. 
  • I'm actually doing this as I type! While wearing #11 socks
  • Elliptical 5x per week at least.  I'm actually toying with the idea of doing a streak but not sure.  I might.  I dunno.  Instead of running, or at least until I get cleared to run, I was thinking of trying to do a run/walk/elliptical sort of thing.  But then I crave my Sunday pajama days.  
  • Log my food!  I can honestly say without hesitation that around the time I stopped logging everything, I fell back into not caring what I put in my body.  THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!  I think even when (if) I ever get to goal and am on maintenance that I have to do this.  There is no way around it. 
  • Water, water water.  If you ever see me in the next few weeks, chances are I'll be heading to the bathroom.  I've seriously dropped the ball with my water and I think that's also hurting me with eating more than I should.  The more water I drink the more full I feel and then I don't think I eat as much.  So, water will also be my other BFF.
  • Start to introduce other stuff into the mix.  I got up this morning and dusted off (quite literally) a yoga dvd and did that for about 20 minutes this morning.  I also *tried* to plank for the first time ever. 
    I'm pretty sure 11 seconds is like the worst time ever.
    Speaking of yoga.  I'm not all that impressed with this dvd.  Lots of yacking and not as much stretching.  Can anyone recommend a really good dvd for yoga dummies beginners?
 Alrighty, so I think I have a good plan in place.  Now to get off my lazy butt and get it done!

P.T. and a Grinch moment

Good morning guys!

I'm feeling a bit better and a bit more in control now that my office party is over with and this weekend went pretty ok as far as eating goes.  Chris and I did make it to tennis before the storms rolled in Saturday.  But the sucky part is after, I had a really bad flare up with my Plantar Faciitis.    And even worse than the bad flare up, I forgot to log, ANYTHING yesterday and I messed up my streak on My Fitness Pal!  Gah!

To that, I say...






Speaking of P.F., I go to my first physical therapy appointment today.  I am really tired of struggling with these P.F. issues!  I wish my stoopid feet would just hurry up and feel better already.  I'm itching to get back into a regular routine again.    And I'm hoping Santa will bring me some new shoes for Christmas and I'm hoping that will also help my feet issues too.  Although I may need 2 pairs, since it really seems that the "tennis" shoes are the real culprit here.  I don't tend to have as bad of the problems with the P.F. after a run as I do when playing tennis.   I know this is a huge stretch, but does anyone have any recommendations for tennis playing shoes for those of you who have P.F.   I do not want to give up my tennis!  I love it too much!

Ok putting my "Grinch" hat on for a few minutes here.  But I can't wait until Christmas is over with.  I mean, I love Christmas, I really do!  I just feel like for some reason I had a much better handle on things last year than I do this year.  Last year, I was just starting my journey and now here I am a year in and I am failing at everything.  I've gained 5 pounds (or more) since Thanksgiving and because of my feet issues combined with bouts of laziness, exercising as been minimal at best.  I'm just ready to get back into a normal routine.  </takes Grinch hat off>

With that being said, I feel like I'm ready to get my head back in the game.  I've got to work out a game plan and get back on track.  Phase 1, will be to get these stupid feet issues out of the way!

Non-update update

Hey quick drive by post to update as to what has been going on with me!

Which actually is that there really isn't much to report.  I did have a follow up Doctor's appointment on Friday about the tendonitis and Plantar Faciitis issues.  The good news is that the tendonitis seems to have completely gone away!  Now for the bad, the P.F. is here to stay it seems.  In fact, I got a steroid/cortezone shot in the ole heel and it still hurts even 3 days later!  I only did my left foot since at the time it seemed to be the worst off and now having the lingering pain from the shot, I'm really glad that I didn't get them both done at once.  Per the doctor's orders, I did bare minimum movement this weekend.  (With the exception of Christmas shopping.. had to do that!)


I did manage to get quite a lot accomplished though! All the shopping is DONE with the exception of a few more stocking stuffers any anything impulse-buying.  I got all my Christmas cards done and mailed out.  And also managed to get nearly everything wrapped that I had.  I've still got a couple more orders coming in from out of state that I'm waiting on but just getting those huge tasks crossed off was a major relief.

I celebrated.

Then met up with mom and aunt and we went looking at a few Christmas lights.

Yesterday while I was finishing wrapping presents and doing Christmas cards, Chris and I had a Christmas movie marathon.


And because I'm trying to keep this honest, I really feel like I still haven't found my grove back, well since November really.   I know we've had a lot on our plates this year, but it just sounds like one big ole excuse after another.  I know I will get back to it, but wanting to and actually doing it are 2 very different things.  I know that I'm starting to slip so I've got to find some time here and there, to at least not spiral out of control.  I am hoping that the foot pain is temporary and that I'll be back to 100% soon.  Oh, also should mention that I'm lining up Physical Therapy for the P.F.  So that will be something that will hopefully help.  In fact, I need to call about that asap.

Alrighty well, it's not much of an update, but it is something I guess.  I hope you are all doing well and trying to stay ahead of the Christmas crunch!

Festive Favorites Linkup and Finish the Sentence with Jake & Holly Linkup

I decided to join this linkup today!  I absolutely LOVE Christmas!  It's my favorite time of year!  I love everything about it, the sights, the smells, the cool(er) weather, being around friends and family!  And I love the search for the perfect gift.  I even love wrapping presents.  I still prefer wrapping instead of gift bags too (plus, we have cats...gift bags never live very long around here without a cat trying to jump into it!)

So here are the questions:

Favorite Christmas Song - O Holy Night


A very, very close second has to be ole Bing and David Bowie though


Christmas song that you can't stand - anything sung by Diana Ross.  I immediate flip it.

Favorite Holiday Movie - Ok I've got so many to list here!  One is another Bing Crosby classic.  I absolutely LOVE White Christmas.  I love it.  A close second would have to be either National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, Elf or even my one and only rom com that I adore, Love Actually!  I usually have a marathon each year of these movies and put them on while wrapping presents!

Real or artificial tree - I'd love to say real but we haven't had a real one since we've had cats.  I used to love to go to the Christmas tree farm and cut down our own tree but it's been many years since we've done that.  Cats and sap do not mix!

White or colored lights - both!  I love plain white lights, but I also love solid colored ones too, especially the blue ones!

All matching ornaments or random personal ones - I'd love to say matching, but unless we by a second tree, ours is just a hodgepodge!   We have personal ornaments mixed in with our nerd themed.

Favorite ornaments - A personal Devyn made one and then Chewbacca the Wookie!



Angel or Star tree topper - Star, but we have gone with a Yoda tree topper before and it was awesome until the cats broke it!

Does Santa wrap his presents or leave them unwrapped? - When Devyn was little, we wrapped but with separate wrapping paper that wasn't used for anything else but Santa!

Favorite Childhood memory - Totally tricking my cousin into telling me what I was getting when I was 7!  I promised her that I would tell her what we got her if she told me first.  Well, I broke my pinky promise as soon as I found out I was getting Star Wars characters!

Coffee, Hot Chocolate or eggnog - Coffee and Hot Chocolate, H.C. on Christmas Eve night though!  (Coffee if we have to put together presents late into the night!)

Christmas morning at home or do you travel - Christmas is usually a whirlwind.  We start off opening presents at our house, then we would stop by Chris's parents, and then to my mom and dads for brunch/lunch.  Then back when Devyn wasn't driving on her own, we would have to bring her to her dad's so she could spend time with them as well.  Then after dropping her off, Chris and I would go to a movie.

Traditional Holiday Meal or something unconventional? - We usually get a honey baked ham and make all the normal sides so traditional for us!

Personalized photo Christmas cards, store bought cards, e-cards, or “ain’t nobody got time for that”?- Store bought cards.  Although I think last year, I had to go the "ain't nobody got time for that" route!  This year, they are going out though!

1. My favorite Christmas was…. after I had Devyn and realizing how much fun it was to give gifts instead of just receive them!  I had a blast playing Santa and seeing Christmas through her eyes!
2. The worst Christmas I had…any involving my ex-husband.  'nuff said.
3. That one gift that made me scratch my head and say, “Hmmmm” was…Fondue maker.  Yea, so not me!
4. One year I….went overboard with gifts!  No, that's actually every year!  :)
5. I think the worst gift to give is….clothes.  Really just give a gift card unless you really know someone and their taste!
6. At Christmastime I typically….spaz out several times a Christmas season.  There isn't enough time!  I really need to start shopping sooner then I wouldn't be so stressed!
7. Typically, family Christmas….is pretty fun.  We have a pretty large extended family and spend Christmas eve with them and my cousins all have little ones now so it's so much fun to see them going through all the emotions and frivolity with their children
8. If I could change one thing about the Holiday season….more time between Thanksgiving and Christmas!
9. It is so hard to buy for….my mother-in-law!  I literally struggle with this every year!  Chris is no help with suggestions either!
10. My favorite Christmas tradition is…watching Christmas movies while wrapping presents
11. Santa, baby, bring me a ….winning Powerball ticket. (me too)

WIW

Weigh In Wednesday

I wasn't even going to join this link up today but just decided that I needed to.  This blog really helps keep me accountable and I just need to own up to the fact that we had a hard week last week and I made poor choices and now I am paying the price.  I'm sure also T.O.M. that is knocking on the door also has a little something to do with it.   But it is what it is and now I just have to get my butt in gear and move on.

Today's number was 191.  Up 4 pounds. 

I ended up not even exercising yesterday either.  Mom and dad needed some help getting their Christmas stuff down so I went over there and helped them. 

In other news, mom and dad's tree looks great!  


Dad even had to put his Clark Griswold-y-ness to good use and fix the star.


Today's plan is this.  I'd like to at least get a 1 mile run in.  Going to ease back into that with a nice and easy run and (weather permitting) Chris and I may go play some tennis tonight.  If not, then I'll go to the gym for elliptical and weights.  I haven't even stepped foot into the gym in almost 2 weeks.  I was really hoping to at least see the 60 pound mark by the end of the year, but now it looks like that is definitely not going to happen since as of this mornings weigh in that is now 7 pounds away.

So kids, let this be a lesson to you.  When you slack off, you pay the price!  I've got to find my grove again, or get it back, or whatever.  Just like Stella.

Loki and Doyle..... Get a room!
