Holding steady or how I tried to run but my legs wouldn't work...

This mornings weigh in could have been better.  I'm only up .2 but I still don't like to see the color green on my Wednesday Weigh In page.   Ah well, I suppose it could be worse but at least this is a lesson to me to know when I eat badly I have to suffer the consequences.  I do have one last chance weigh in tomorrow on the January Challenge that I'm on with the DIS Disney Message Boards.   My starting weight at the beginning of January was 225.6 and I had hoped to lose 4 pounds during the month.  As of today I'm down 5.2 pounds for the month so I did a bit better than what I had planned. 

Yesterday morning, needless to say, I did not get up and run.  So I opted to do it after work.  I got dressed and headed out.  After a few minutes I realized that there was no way I could do it.  Between the wind howling and my legs just completely aching, I switched to walking.  I ended up walking for about 42 minutes until Chris got home.  It wasn't bad but it wasn't what I planned.  I tend to get grumpy when things don't quite go according to how I had hoped them too - that may be because I'm an only child, who knows, but I still felt bad since I didnt get to run.  I will try again on Thursday.  And because I didn't run in the morning, that also meant that I didn't get to the gym yesterday. 

Alas, today is a new day.  So... I WILL GO TO THE GYM TODAY.  I will visit Seymour and also do my weights routine.  I'm *hoping* to get at least 60 minutes on the elliptical.  I will just see how that plays out and not overdo if my legs are still hurting.  At the minimum, I will do 35 minutes though.  My mom wants me to go to the LSU basketball game with her after the gym but the only thing I want to do after the gym ususally is take a hot shower, get in my jammies and get caught up on tv from the dvr.  So unless she tells me that David Tennant or Paul Rudd is going to be at the basketball game, I will likely skip it. 

Oh!  I've decided that I'm going to try to exercise at least 1200 minutes in February and for the Weigh In Challenge I'm going to try for 6 pounds loss during Feb. 

Next Thursday is going to be the 3 month mark for my weight loss/lifestyle change initiative.  So I will definitely take my measurements and maybe try to take some better current pics.  I'm hoping that I can "see" more progress.  I kinda feel like I'm stalling out even though the scale is, in fact, sorta moving.  My clothes are fitting better but I'm not really seeing a difference in size, if that makes sense.  I guess I was just hoping that I'd be in a different size by now.  So in addition to being irate when things don't go my way, apparently I'm impatient also!  ;)

Saturday highs/Sunday lows and update on January Challenges

I had to go and muck things up yesterday.  I ate like utter crapola.  We had company over (Chris's brother, our friend John and our other friend Amy) to play some Munchkin (it's a card game) and I ate chips, salsa, bacon and cheddar dip, a grilled cheese sandwich and then a Chicken Enchilada.  Oh and I did limit myself to just one margarita. Surprisingly enough after keying everything in, I still managed to be right at my calorie goal according to MFP.  (that is a miracle in of itself).   So after skipping breakfast and then grazing all afternoon/evening, needless to say I started feeling like I'd been hit by a truck.  I felt awful throughout the night.

I woke up this morning and got on the scale.  Ugh.  I gained 3 pounds since yesterday !!!!  I'm hoping that it was all the salt from the chips and that it evens back out by Wednesday.  Food intake is already much better today and I'm on track for hitting my 1200-1300 daily goal.  Water has been good today so far.  I need to knock out about 24 more ounces though just to hit my personal water goal today. 

I'm not going to hit my 1500 exercise minutes for January either.  As of now I'm at 1051/1500, so I think I'm going to back down to 1000 minutes for February.

For my Walk to Rivendell (LOTR) Challenge, I'm up to 48 miles for the year (between elliptical, walking and running) so still have a ways to go there, but I'm hoping that if my running increases more and more that I can knock more milage off of that.

I can't do much exercise wise tonight with bowling but I will go to the gym tonight and at least do the weights.  Gym plan for the rest of the week is running on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (Tuesday and Thursday will hopefully be before work if I can swing it).  Then that way I can alternate weights and elliptical the rest of the week after work.  Weather permitting, I'd like to go to the lakes on Saturday for a run.  I'm really wanting to start working on knocking some of that 5K time off.  Sunday is jammie day (ironicially enough it's also laundry day)  :)

Speaking of Seymour, the elliptical machine, I'm hoping that he and I can finish up watching Luther Season 2 this week.  From there I'm trying to decide what to watch or rewatch next.  I've been wanting to rewatch Doctor Who (especially the Tennant years) and maybe going old school and rewatching some Buffy.  Anyone have suggestions for tv shows to watch while at the gym?

First 5K!

Well I did it!  I have officially completed my first 5K! 

Chris and I got there around 7:15 am at the race event and it was apparent that they were all still setting up.  So we walked around for a bit to help try to calm my nerves.  My mom showed up not long after.  Along with the 5K, they sponsors were also having a 4K walk, an LSU Baseball player mini reunion, a MLB Softball home run derby and a softball game.  So there were lots of things going on. 

Before the race, as we were lining up an older gentleman came up to me and started talking to me.  I think he could sense that I was a bundle of nerves.  He was really nice and asked me if this was my first 5K.  I accidentally said no and that I had run another but I think I totally misinterpreted that.  My meaning was that I've run one before on my own.  So I'm still not quite sure how to answer that lol!  Anyway right before they counted us down and we were off, the representative explained that a portion of the race was going to be through gravel.  Internally, I started to panic,  I've never run on anything besides concrete and the track at the gym.  I knew the gravel would be slow going and I do have this paranoia about tripping.  (Which did happen too, and I didn't actually fall but I did stumble... and not on the gravel part!  On the sidewalk part that was leading back to Alex Box Stadium.  Thank goodness it was still so foggy and no one saw that!)

The gravel was a little tricky.  We had such a sense fog and the humidity just hung in the air and that caused the gravel to be slick.  The gravel portion was probably about 3/4 of a mile.  About halfway through, I realized that I was a complete moron and I could have worked my way off to the side and had a smoother run on the grass. 

My biggest fear going into it was that I was going to be dead last.  Well, unfortunately that actually did happen.  BUT once I started running and saw that I was being left I just mustered up my courage and kept on trucking.  Along the way another set of runners (not doing our 5K) passed me up and yelled, "you are going great! Keep up the good work!"  That was the moment I really started to tear up.  I knew then that I would do this.  When I got to the water station just around mile 2 the little bitty skinny college aged girl said, "You are doing fantastic!!!"  And then towards the end another group of girls were cheering for me as well.  Of course, my biggest fans were there to greet me at the end.  Hubby and my mom were there.  Unfortunately, my daughter had to babysit over night Friday so she wasn't there. 

After the race the older gentleman came back up to me and asked how it went.  I told him that I finished!  He asked if I ran and walked and I said that I ran the whole thing.  I think he was impressed! I did tell him what my pace was and that I was hoping that once more weight comes off that I will be able to really work on timing.  He was really nice and encouraging and told me to look for him at other races!  I think I will do that!

Looking back, I'm actually glad that my first 5K was such a small event.  There may have been 20 runners total.  All thin, athletic and experienced.  And then there was me.  Chris and I didn't hang around much after.  He did get a slice of pizza from the vendor there but I was trying to avoid the jambalaya and beer that was being handed out.  I just guzzled my water and we went home and Chris made me a protein smoothie while I showered.  Then I put my jammies on and sat on the couch for the rest of the day.  I'm a little bit sore but not too bad.

Well my first official 5K is in the books and I can officially cross that one off my goals list!  I'm thinking about doing at least one official 5K each month.  So since February is around the corner, need to figure out what I want to do!  In the meantime, I need to get working on decreasing time and increasing my speed I think.

Wednesday update

I had a little time this morning before I needed to get ready for work to get my run in early.  I have bloodwork that I have to do every 2 weeks or so for the Blood Clotting disorder that I have so that the docs check my blood to make sure they are giving me the right dosage of Coumadin.  And since the clinic doesn't open until 7:30 that means I have a little more time to get a run in so I usually almost always try to schedule a morning run that day.  Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't.  Personally, I'd much rather run in the morning anyway than after work.  My normal work hours are 7:00-3:30 so the runs that I do on other days means that I have to get up by 4:45 and out the door by no later than 5.  Even then I'm usually running late on those days.  I've really got to find a way to make this work!

My plan is to run 30 minutes or 2 miles today and sort of take it easy until I run the 5K on Saturday.  So I slept in a little (if you call getting up at 5:30 sleeping in... /sigh) then got up and promptly sat on the computer while "getting ready".  Yea, that never works out well.  I was finally out the door and running by around 6:10 and about 10 minutes later (one lap around my block) I finally had the "joy" to discover what Runners Trots are. So I hauled butt (ha!) back inside my house and just barely made it in time.  Thankfully I had enough sense to pause my Endomondo app and finished, ahem, my business, then headed back out.

I knew before 'the incident' that my pace seemed like it was going pretty well.  I picked back up with Endomondo and did 2 more full laps up and down my block for exactly 2 miles. 

So that 15:53 is a personal best!  I see improvement!  Hooray!

The game plan on exercise for the rest of the week is to visit Seymour today (my favorite elliptical machine that I've given a name too) and he and I will watch Luther together while I do my thing.  I'll visit Seymour again tomorrow and do weights also.  On Friday after work, I have 2 wakes to attend so there won't be any excericse done unless I can manage to get up and do it before work.  Right now that seems doubtful.  One of the funerals is about 25 miles away from where I live and the other one is in Opelousas, LA, which is about 45 minutes to an hour away.  Saturday's run starts at 8am so it is going to be a crazy beginning to the weekend.  Sunday is my rest day and stay-in-my-jammies all day long day.

Oh and one last thing!  I'm down 2 pounds this week bringing my total loss to 20 pounds since I started in November.  MFP says 24 but that's from my all time highest weight.

Something weird is happening in my brain...

I don't think I've been bitten my a radioactive spider like Peter Parker either..  Or been exposed to gamma radiation similiar to what happened to Bruce Banner. 

I'm sitting here minding my p's and q's doing busy work at my desk (Killdisk-ing computers in case anyone is wondering) and all I can think about is how much I'd rather be at the gym and how much time is left in my work day until I can go.

Could it be that I've turned a major corner here?  I have not been dreading the gym for a few weeks now.  I've actually been looking forward to it. 

Anyways, I just thought that this was a strange phemenomon.

3 hours and 46 minutes until I see my friend, Mr. Elliptical again.  We have been spending alot of time bonding over the tv show "Luther" together.  In fact, I have named him Seymour.  We have that kind of relationship now. *

*I promise that I haven't been drinking at work.  Only water.  Pinky swear!

First (un)offical 5K!

I decided to push myself this morning since I had the day off just to see if I could feasibly run 3.1 miles since the race is coming up this Saturday.  *Btw, yes, I decided that I will sign up for it!!!

Sooo it was slow but I freaking did it!   I JUST RAN 3.1 MILES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


Eating habits on the weekend

A couple of quick posts this morning before I need to get ready for my dentist appointment.

I'm having the toughest time with my eating on the weekend.  It's not that I eat overly bad, I just am not consistent with 3 square meals.  For example on Saturday, I woke up and went to do my run, then met my mom at the gym.  She has a "Saturday" thing where she wants to go eat Chick-Fil-A after working out.  I don't usually get anything (still miffed at them) but mom did get me a fruit cup.   I came home and at the fruit and made a protein smoothie.  By this time it was around 11 or so.  Chris ate his leftovers from Wingstop.  So right off the bat we skipped breakfast.  We spent the rest of the day pretty much chilling playing Borderlands 2 or watching movies and we finally started getting hungry around 4pm.  So we ended up making grilled cheese sandwiches.  I only ate 1 of those rather than my used-to-be normal 2-3 and ended up at that point with a whopping 800 calories.  So I topped those off with 2 margaritas so that pretty much put me at my 1200-1400 level.

So as you can see, it wasn't the best eating, and I know I shouldn't be padding my calories with margaritas or wine either.  This is usually how it goes every single weekend.  I can eat consistent and clean during the week but the weekends turn to complete and utter chaos.

I just need to be a bit more structured I guess and make myself eat something maybe between the run and the gym I can get something in. 

Anyone have any suggestions about this?  Other than turning the ps3 off ;)

I graduated!

W9D3 of C25K is officially in the books and done. For the first time in many years, I have actually finished this program.  I've tried this before about 3 times but this time I stuck it out.  I am really proud that I saw this through. 


The first mile lap was a PR for me but the second, I slowed down a bit.  All in all I did a smidge more than 2 miles.  

So, what's next.... weather permitting, I may sign up for a 5 K that is being run next weekend.  You can register the morning of and its not going to be a real large one.  My plan for now is to run as far as I can go and then walk the rest.  Here is the link to their website:   2 Seam Dream Foundation

I'm scheduled for a Virtual 5K on the 25th, but I'm wondering if I can just do it on the 26th?  I'm not really sure how those work but I don't think at this point I should run back to back days.  At least I've never tried doing that but I can imagine that I would need to give my legs a rest.

So I guess my plan from this point is to gradually increase my time and distance until I can actually run a complete 5K.  I'm thinking 2 minute increments? Maybe?   Eventually I do plan to start the Bridge 2 10 K but for now I think I will just see how things go now and still plan on running 3 times per week.

So this is probably the biggest NSV I have ever had at this point!  I'm ready to see if I can do more!

Inspiration...

I was browsing around MFP forums today and I usually like to hang around and view the success stories and nsv topics.  They usually help keep me motivated and I really do enjoy reading them.  I came across a post that had a link to another blog and after reading it, I'm now sitting here at work trying to compose myself from becoming a blubbering mess.

It also serves as a reminder to me that I need to be really proud at how far I've come.  In Week 1 of C25K I could barely run a whole minute at a time.  As of today I'm running 35+ minutes and pushing a bit further and further each time.

So the scale may not be moving as far and as fast as I would like and my clothes may not be falling off of me just yet, but for now, I can honestly admit that I am a runner.

Who wouldda thunk it?

I was debating on whether or not I should post these or not.  Even though the scale has been moving and I've been taking measurements, I really do not see a difference.  My clothes are fitting better (and some of my jeans are sagging a bit) so I guess there is something going on.

Ah well, here is "progress pictures".  The first was a few days before Thanksgiving and I had probably lost about 6 pounds already at that point.  The current was last week at roughly 17 pounds down.



So I suppose 17 pounds is really nothing to be ashamed of.  I just wish I could really see a difference.  I guess with a few more pounds gone and clothes not fitting anymore will give me a better idea of progress.  It's not much but it is something I suppose!

Quick drive by post about failing W9D1

I set out this morning to start Week 9 of the program.  It's a grey outside and unusually HOT and humid day here.  I also thought to myself since it was a Sunday that I wanted to see how I could do without my compression stockings on (I have a blood clotting disorder and pretty much wear them all the time).  My legs have been feeling really good lately and I don't know what possessed me to do this.  I felt my legs swelling in the short time I was running.  Needless to say I got 12 minutes and and headed to the house.  So now here I am propping my legs up to get the swelling to go down.  :(  I'm a complete moron I swear!

So,  game plan is this.  I've got bowling tomorrow so pretty much exercise will be non-existent.  Tuesday morning I will do W9D1 over again and hopefully hit the gym Tuesday evening as well.  This pushes the next C25K day to being Thursday and then hopefully by next Saturday I will be officially a graduate of C25K!

Blog title change

So I've decided to make my blog a little more "me". I decided that it's time to separate my liking of fitness and weight loss fan pages from my personal facebook account.  I'm thinking I will still keep everyones that I like from my personal page, but if I want to comment, I will need to make a blog facebook page and leave the commenting and sharing of things on that one.

So that is why I decided to do the name change on this blog as well.  Something easier than There And Back Again And Then Some!

2 miles! 2 MILES!!!

Who has two thumbs and made 2 miles her b*tch this morning?!  This overweight - 38 year old!  And my timing is better too!  So all around a very successful run today!  Today was Week 8, Day 1, for those counting.  I knew I was going to be pressed for time this morning so I made sure I was up at 4:30 and out the door by 5am.  Today was Day 1 of Board Meeting day at work, which means we have to set up a wireless network with 3 access points, a router, a switch and oh, about 20 laptops around 7am.  And since I knew that was looming, I wanted to make sure I was awake and had plenty of time to get ready for work.  I would have run on Sunday (my normal day to run) but we had rain and cold yuck all day yesterday.  I knew I wouldn't have time after work either with bowling starting back up.  I bowl on a league on Mondays so after work is out.



Pace has definitely improved!  I'm super psyched about that now if I can get a mile in 15 or less that would be great!

Oh!  I tried another protien smoothie yesterday and it came out ah-may-zing.  It tasted just like a Blueberry Muffin!



Work has been kicking my butt today so back at it I suppose.   Happy Monday, everyone!

Saturday..not in the park!

Good afternoon everyone!

Today has been crazy busy so far but I've got a lot accomplished.  I actually woke up late which was heavenly.  Very rarely do I sleep past 6am but today I managed to sleep until about 7:30.  Usually there is a cat in my face pestering me to get up and feed them.  Doyle must have had pity on me and didn't start his shenanigans until around 7ish.  

At first I thought that we could go to the Lakes today but the weather was not cooperating.  Instead my mom called and said she wanted to go to the gym with me so we did that instead.  I managed 60 minutes on the elliptical!  After that, ran to the pharmacy to pick up some medicine for Dev before she had to go to work.  Then went home and ate some fruit for breakfast and then Chris and I made our meal plans out for the week.  I've recently found a lot of great ideas for healthy smoothies/shakes that I'm going to give a try.  I will post more on that in a bit and I also need a boost in my calories so these will help with that as well.  We finally got all that done and then off to drop Dev off, hit the grocery store and run a couple more errands.  We are finally done!

Ok so the shake I tried today was the Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Shake and it really came out good.  I didn't quite have all the ingredients that it called for so I made a few substitutions of my own.  I keyed in everything that I put in it in MFP and it showed my version was a bit more calorie intense (485 total...) but that is actually ok since I have a lot of them to make up for anyway.  If you want to see what I used to substitute with these ingredients, check my MFP foods out for today.

Here is the recipe if any of you are interested:

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Shake

1 cup almond milk
1 scoop chocolate protein powder 
1/2 banana
2 Tbsp. peanut butter
6 ice cubes

Blend until smooth.  257 calories.

Week 7 - Done!!!

Nothing exciting really happened this morning other than me having the "should I run or shouldn't I run" discussion in my head before heading out.  I knew that if I didn't, my scheduling will be "off" but I was thinking that I could run this afternoon.  Well about that time hubby woke up and came stumbling out of the bedroom.  He asked why I was still in the living room and I told him my dilemma.  He said, "Go.. you will regret it if you don't and besides, you are dressed anyway".  And I suppose he was right.  Now that it's done I am glad it is over with.  Now I don't feel so guilty about not doing something this afternoon either.  I got the main exercise down for the day already.

Oh, I did get a sub 17mm today too so I suppose that is something to celebrate!


So unless my time improves drastically, looks like I'll be doing a 5K in around 50 minutes. 

On my "off" days, I have been really hitting the gym.  The last two times I went, I did the elliptical for 45 minutes and then 53 minutes yesterday.  Also did some weight training as well.  With yesterdays elliptical, I decided to try something new.  Instead of music or reading (my poor kindle fire just does not work at the gym.  The holder on the ellipical constantly turns it off, or some of the holders are actually broken), I pulled netflix up on my phone and put the BBC tv show, Luther on (my newest tv obsession... Loving that show!) and just let it ride.  Next thing I knew it was 53 minutes later!  So unless I don't use alot of data doing this, I can easily see me incorporating this into my routine!

W7D2

Today is starting off to be pretty epic so far!  I had both a non-scale victory and a scale victory today!

I FINALLY see some movement on the scale!  After 3 and a half weeks of seeing the numbers 228 or 229 on the scale every.single.morning., this morning it showed 225.6!  And that is also with me being feeling rather crummy about my monthly "visitor" making her appearance.  So I'm really proud of that and I know I busted my butt last week on the exercise front and that probably made a difference as well.

My non-scale victory came during my run this morning.  Week 7, Day 2 is a 5 minute walk, 25 minute run and a 5 minute cool down walk.  Well today I pushed a little harder and instead of the cool down walk, I ran for 5 more minutes!  30 minutes total!   Now my mileage is still not great and I'm no where near an actual 5K in distance, but I did run every step.  

Oh and about the 5K distance, when I do feel up to it, I have plotted a route out that will be a true 5K.  I will need to drive to a church and park there but its less than 3 minutes from my house.  Another option would be to run around the lakes.  That route (if I don't do the extra loop) is just over a 5K in distance but I'm honestly psyched to try it out.  I can't wait until I get to that point!  Patience, young padawan... I need patience.  But I am getting there!

New Year's Goals for 2013

2013 Goals     

I read another blogger that expressed her goals and wishes instead of actual resolutions and I think that is a fantastic idea.  I’ve never been a fan of resolutions.  I always feel like I’m setting myself up for failure.  So maybe just changing the wording will help.  Kinda like not a diet but a lifestyle change.

So here is this year's non-resolution list:

Health and Weight Loss
  • GOAL: Track every thing I eat and exercise in My Fitness Pal for 365 days
  • WISH: To lose 70 pounds this year
Fitness
  • GOAL: Finish C25K and continue to run at least 3 times per week
  • WISH: To run at least 4-5 5K’s this year
Blogging and such
  • GOAL: Post at least 5 times per month.  It really helps keep me honest and accountable
Personal
  • GOAL: Eliminate as much debt as possible
  • GOAL: Read at least one book per month.  (I go through phases where I read vicariously for a month or two and then go several months without reading something.   I want to do better with this.)
