July Update

July is coming to a close and August is knocking at the door.  The scale may have not been as kind as I had hoped, but I have really kicked things up a notch on the exercise front.  I think that can be directly attributed to the Fitbit and the fact that I'm back to running 3 times a week.

Weight wise I'm only down 2.8 for the month.  My Wednesday Weigh Ins are listed here .  But considering I went on vacation and it was my birthday this month, I'm not too overall unhappy about that.  It's still a loss, I suppose!   I'm not sure why it seems but ever since I hit 40# lost, the weight has really been a struggle for each and every pound.  As of now, I'm 1.4 away from 50# total and I sure hope that once I hit that, the weight will start falling off regularly again.  Why does it seem that the first few months the pounds just melt off and then it's like you hit a brick wall or something.

As compared to June's...

My steps have been fairly consistent.  I think only twice since I've had the Fitbit Flex did I not do at least 10,000 steps in this month.

I do have one 5K I'm planning on running this coming month and it is the Baton Rouge Zoo Zoom 5K on August 24th!  I'm really looking forward to it too.  It should be a lot of fun.  There are also several more coming up in the next few months that I'm trying to decide if I want to do or not.  I'd love to run something on Thanksgiving morning (we have a Turkey Trot 5K) but it starts around 7:30 and it's in downtown Baton Rouge.  Thanksgiving is always pretty busy and I usually get up fairly early to go to my moms and help them start cooking.  So, anything that I do on that day for sure, I'll have to just run on my own.  There is also a Zombie run in October, an Oktoberfest run, and a Jingle Bell 5K that I'm thinking of running.

Anyway, that thought kinda got away from me a bit.  But back to the Zoo Zoom, I'm going to set a goal to run it in under 42 minutes. 

So my August goals are:
  • Run the Zoo Zoom in under 42 minutes
  • Run at least 3x per week and work on time and distance
  • Continue exercising (walking/elliptical/running) at least 5x per week 
  • Strength train at least 2x per week
I'm also thinking of picking up a tennis racket again soon.  I may look into some intermediate tennis lessons if I can find any close by.  The problem with tennis is that no one in my family likes to play.  Bummer, because I really enjoy it.  So I may *gulp* put myself out there and see if I can find a tennis buddy somewhere along the way.

And since I haven't mentioned anything nerdy in this post, I just thought I'd share that I watched my all time favorite Doctor Who episode while on the elliptical last night.   :)

July Exercise Minutes - 1856/1500 **I do hope to squeeze in a little more elliptical and weights tonight so that will be adjusted.  Still, I blew through my monthly goal this time around.  First time ever!!!

Saturday update and Peach Cobbler Protein Shake review

Yesterday started off really lovely when I woke up to a thunderstorm.  I had a fairly busy day planned so I really wanted to get my next B210K in before getting into the whole omg-company-coming-over-so-I-need-to-frantically-clean-all-the-things!!  After I got up and did my normal bathroom routine and started the coffee pot.  I peeped out the window and the rain had slowed to a slight drizzle.  So I thought, that it was now or never and I got my shoes on and headed out the door.

Once I got outside, and I wasn't sure when I would get hit with a downpour, I decided just to forgo the B210K plan today and instead just run straight through.  I'm not sure if mile 1 is always just a mental thing for me but it is always my worst mile, even though its my best time.  I'm constantly thinking that this is really hard and I would rather walk it.  But like magic, each time I hear the mile 1 indicator, I've usually found my stride and it gets much easier from there.

My normal plan was to just run 3, but then I thought I would see how 4 miles would feel.  I felt pretty ok once I hit the 3 mile mark so I would give it a go.  I did it.  My official longest run ever was in the books!

Now granted, it was slow going.  I'm not used to running in the rain and I wasn't sure of my footing.  Plus there is a lot of construction in my neighborhood and they are making a mess on the streets (mud, slivers of wood, nails, etc.)

I got back home and decided to celebrate with trying a new Protein Shake recipe out.  It turned out pretty good!  It's not my absolute favorite, but I will definitely put this one in the rotation!

Here is the recipe in case you are interested.

Peach Cobbler Protein Shake
1 scoop French Vanilla Protein Powder
1 cup Almond Milk
1/2 cup Frozen Peaches
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
10 ice cubes

The rest of my morning was cleaning and getting ready for company to come and visit.  We had a rousing adventure playing Dungeons and Dragons.  Lots of fun was had!

And I think Oz, decided to get in the spirit of exercise recently.  But I don't think he's doing it right!

B210K, Banana Bread Protein Smoothie and upcoming race(s)

Good morning guys! 

Chris gave me the go ahead to start thinking and planning a Disney trip next year, so I immedately thought to myself, "Self, now just what Disney Race would you love to run as your first runDisney event..."  Chris said as long as the parks weren't hot or crowded.  So now I'm just trying to decide what I want to do.  My inital thought was a 5K but then I thought, why not think a bit bigger.  I've been toying with the idea of doing the Bridge to 10K program anyway but my time is still not the best when it comes to 5K's.  But then again, I'm thinking time will improve when more weight starts falling off.  At least I hope.  I really don't want to be doing 15 minute miles forever.   </shrug> 

I've been running 5K's about twice a week now for about a month and my times are still lingering around the 45-46 minute mark.  From the looks of this chart, they think you can run a 10K in 60 minutes?  Uh, yeah, I don't see that happening for me.

So despite all that, I wasn't sure if I wanted to use this program or not.  I finally threw caution to the wind and paid my $1.99 for the B210K Pro app. 

I ran it this morning and it wasn't a terrible run.  I will say this, I'm not sure how I'm going to like going back and doing intervals again.  Even since the walk "breaks" are only 1 minute each, I'm worried about it throwing my momentum off.

I did try a new protein shake out this morning too.  I'm still on the fence about it but it was good.  It may just need a bit of tweaking.  I keyed everything into My Fitness Pal and it said that it is only 184 calories.

Banana Bread Protein Smoothie
1 cup Almond Milk (unsweetened)
1 scoop Designer Whey French Vanilla Protein Powder
1 small banana
1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tbsp Torani French Vanilla Sugar Free Syrup
6 ice cubes

Oh!  I've finally come up with a name for my "new" elliptical at the gym.  I christen thee... Jerome!

He's no Seymour.  And his "Book holders" cover the closed captioning on my cell phone.  Hrmph.

And finally I'm going to sign up for the Baton Rouge ZooZoom 5K next month!  I'm pretty excited about this one.  It should be a lot of fun to run around the zoo!  I'm also toying with an Oktoberfest run later on in the year.

Florida vacation

Hi everyone!

I'm finally back from our vacation.  We had a fantastic trip and I'm already missing being there.  I sure wish we could have stayed longer.  But, back to reality today!   

I'm REALLY proud that I got in a ton of exercise on my trip.  Something that I never, ever would have done before but every single day except one, I did a considerable amount of exercise.  I guess I needed to, just to compensate for the eating and the drinking! 

Exercise breakdown for the week -
7/17 - 20 min run, 30 min walk, 40 min swim
7/18 - 60 min walk
7/19 - 51 min run
7/20 - 87 min walk (hills, hills, omg HILLS!)
7/21 - 87 min walk

We left out early Wednesday morning around 7 am.  My dad had it in his head that he really wanted to drive up the coast all the way into Florida and it turned out to be a really nice change of pace from the Interstate the entire way.  But by the time we left, I'm glad we did take the interstate back.  I was ready to get home and see Devyn and my kitty cats.

The scale hasn't really been my bff lately, but that is ok!  At least that is what I keep telling myself.  I think I'm really going to try to hide the scale from myself this week and only weigh on my normal day (Wednesday).  Next week should be easy to not to step on the scale unless Aunt Renva has one in plain sight somewhere at her house.  

Despite the numbers not moving, I still have a couple of non-scale victories to celebrate.

NSV #1 - Size 16!!!
My mom, aunt, daughter and I went clothes shopping yesterday and had a great time.  One of the rare instances where I've actually uttered those words about clothes shopping.  I'm not a normal girl like that.  I usually loathe shopping especially for myself.  I'm a grab and go sort.  If I don't see anything that I like then I just move on.  On a whim I picked up a pair of size 16 women's jeans yesterday not thinking that I would fit in them.  They did!  And zipped!  Granted there was a muffin top going on but, I went ahead and bought them since they weren't too terribly uncomfortable.  I'll post pics later of a few of the things I got.  I'm all sweaty and gross and don't really feel like modeling them just yet.  ;)

With the exception of July 2nd, I've done at least something every single day!  I can honestly attribute this to the new Fitbit!

Oh mom and I also signed up for a squat challenge hosted by our local YMCA.  Hopefully my butt will thank my by the end of the challenge. 

And last but not least in Desiree' related news, my mom bought me a new pair of running shoes for my birthday!  I went and picked them out yesterday and gave them a whirl this morning.  Amazing how fast those shoes wear down when you pound the pavement so much.  I put on one of the new ones yesterday and one of the older pair that I got in December.  It was quite telling how different the soles felt.

Fitbit Flex

I've been wanting to post about my new Fitbit Flex.  These are my personal opinions based on one week of having this device. 

I have been gushing over this thing for about a week now but I can't help it!   This has really helped me kick it into gear and even on the days that I normally don't do any form of exercise, I have gotten out and done something.  I don't want to break my streak and I'm constantly wanting to move around until I hit my 10,000 steps.

After you get the Flex, there is a small dongle that you can plug into the USB port of your computer.  It should be the main one that you use and each time you are within a few yards of that, it will automatically sync with the Flex.  The flex can also automatically sync via bluetooth to any smartphone.  There is also a free App for the fitbit that you can check your stats if you aren't near your main computer.

This is the insert that goes into the wristband.  We charged it up via USB, and the instructions say that it should hold a charge for about 5 days.

So far I'm really impressed with this!  It was around $100 and as far as I'm concerned, it was a great investment!

Woeful Wednesday

Ugh, .6 up this week and back at 199.  But, I am fairly sure that I can attribute that to TOM.  It's still just so frustrating seeing the same numbers on the scale day in and day out.  Chris suggested that maybe I go speak with a nutritionist just to see if we can figure out what to do to get the scale moving again.  I'm not sure, but it may be worth a try.  We rarely eat out or eat any fast food for that matter and the biggest problem with our food is that I can't really deviate from what my normal eating patterns are due to the fact that I am on coumadin.  That basically means, I can't go out and eat salads all week.  I've just really been trying to be mindful of what I eat and do so in moderation.  I've also been tracking everything since November in MFP so I know exactly how many calories I consume.  <shrug>  Who knows....

But, I will say this. Since getting the fitbit I have been OBSESSED with hitting my step goal each day!  So even on my designated "rest days" I've still been getting out there and doing something. 

Mom met up with me yesterday and we went to the gym.  It was the first time I went back since they got new machines.  They each a nice little bow on them.

I will have to think of a new name for the elliptical once I figure out which one will be my favorite.  The one I was on yesterday felt a bit wobbly, so I'll need to test out a few more until I find "The One".

I managed 65 minutes on the one I was on yesterday.   I like that you can adjust the time to bigger chunks now instead of having to break it down into 30 minute increments.

The new machine and I watched the Doctor Who episode, "The Lazarus Experiment" together.

Oh!  We made a spur-of-the-moment decision yesterday!  We are going to go to Florida next week on a quickie vacation.  We will be staying with my aunt and uncle in Brooksville, Fl and I'm so very excited!  They have a beautiful house and gorgeous property so I'm really looking forward to just relaxing for a bit.  It will be me, Chris and my parents.   It will be so tough being that close to Disney and not being able to go but we will see.  Maybe we can swing something!    So the countdown starts and I need to see if I can work on a game plan for exercise while I'm there.

Good week

Happy Saturday morning everyone!

I'm still riding this motivation high at the moment! This has been a really good week for me so I'm halfway waiting for the other shoe to drop at some point, sad to say.  Motivation comes in waves for me and along with the good eventually comes the bad.  But for now, I'm going to just enjoy it. 

Tuesday, I took a rest day because I went and had this done...

I had promised myself a long time ago that if I ever hit ONEderland that I would go drastic and color my hair purple.  So I did it! I couldn't be happier with the results.  I love my purple and Chris even gave me the biggest compliment and said I should totally keep the purple in.  I'm not sure about that but maybe!  For now, I am loving it!

Chris also gave me an early birthday present on Tuesday.  Since I never really can give him any suggestions about what I want, I actually had an idea this time so he went out and got me a Fitbit Flex. 

This is my own opinion but I freaking love this thing.  This is basically a pedometer/activity monitor but it's really perfect for my OCD tendencies and making me want to hit my daily goals.

Wednesday's Weigh In basically had me at the holding steady point for the 3rd week.  I'm really hoping for a whoosh next week.

Thursday, I got up bright and early to head to mom and dad's to help them finish their yard work.  It took about 6 hours, but we got it all done and the yard looks great!  Between what Fitbit said and MFP, I burned around 1200 calories!  We also grilled some Spiedies (marinated chicken) and enjoyed hanging out with the family.  Then Chris and I went home and crashed.

Since Chris had to work the next day, I decided that I would go to the lakes just to see how far I could go.  My pace was very slow since I didn't quite get up as early as I would have hoped to avoid some of the heat but all in all, I'd say it was a successful run!  I actually PR'ed!  Even with stopping to snap a few pictures and a brief water break. 

This was also the first time I ran a complete 5K since March!

So my game plan for today is to get 45 minutes in on the elliptical and then shower and meet mom and dad to go see the Lone Ranger.  And then the rest of the weekend will be me relaxing hopefully!  We are trying to get caught up on Breaking Bad so hoping to finish the 4th season this weekend as well. 

The Fitbit is definitely going to make me want to get my steps in even on my rest days.  That can't be all bad, right?!

June exercise results and a weekend update

Morning everyone!

Thought I'd pop in and give my update for my June Exercise challenge.  I ended up the month with 1227/1500.  All and all, not too shabby but not quite where I wanted it to be.  So I think for July's challenge, I will keep the same # of minutes. 

I basically stuck to my game plan all last week with the exception of Saturday's exercise. 

Friday, I went bowling after work then Chris and I went out to eat and then to a movie, like we normally do.  We had a nice night and saw The Heat!  It was very funny.  Glad we picked that one.   We also quickly took a pic of Dev working it in the concession stand. 

And try not to look so degraded! 

My orginal plan for Saturday was to go to the lakes for a run/walk.  But I had forgotten that I promised to help my mom clean out her flowerbeds.  So I got up bright and early to head over and do that.  Mom will likely kill me for posting these, so if she's sees this... SORRY MOMMY!! :)



Needless to say, this took about 3 hours to get that far and I didn't finish.  So I'll be heading back out there later on this week to try to do the rest.  MyFitnessPal said the 2 hours and 45 minutes of "Gardening, general" burned about 920 calories.  I'm not sure how accurate that was but judging from my sweating, I'd say it was close enough!

Sunday, was rest day and play catch up on laundry.  We also played around a bit with the new dlc from Borderlands 2 and then of course, Dexter came back on last night!  Loved it!

I also made a run to Target and look what I found!  My new water cup!

I did have a nice NSV this morning to share.  I was determined to run 2 miles without walking and I did!  This is the longest run I've had without a walk break in about 3 months time.  It felt great!  So glad I managed to get up and get it done early too.  Mondays are always hard for me to get the exercise in and here lately mornings in general have been tough. 

I ran 36 minutes straight.  I may do this again later on this week and try a solid 5K next week.  The heat has been so bad here lately that it is next to impossible to do it in the afternoons.  We've hit around 92º-95º pretty much every day last week and the humidity is up there too.
