Social Media and the Skinny Geek

There are so many options nowadays with social media and it can be quite overwhelming.   I've just barely managed to make a facebook page in addition to the blog here.  I think of the blog as my main form of communication but I see so  many of my other friends use twitter, instagram, and pinterest too.

My goal for this blog has always really been about my journey and how I can look back from time to time and read about my struggles and my successes.  I created this for that very reason but it has since grown and now I have a few followers.  (Thank you!  Mwah!)

I consider myself pretty tech-savvy but I have yet to really cross into those other social media outlets.  Sure I have a twitter account for stalking, er, "following" my favorite celebs but I've never really felt the urge to tweet anything.  Pinterest scares the crap out of me because it shows me see all the stuff that I can't possibly do or have time to do, even though the stuff there sure is pretty to look at.  I barely have a grasp on facebook and use it as an alternate to the blog when I want to post something quick or that catches my eye (mostly geek related..)

So this was just something I have been thinking about lately and I wanted to hear some opinions about social media.  I'm not sure yet if I'm going to delve into these other areas, but you never know!

Do you use other forms of social media?
How do you find a balance with social media, life in general and exercise?
Do you think its necessary to utilize all these outlets to  reach out to people?

  1. I am a facebooker too and that takes enough of my time - I have no more time to fall in love with pinterest - instagram - twitter - ugh! I wish I can find an app to post to all of them simultaneously!

    1. I have an instagram, but honestly never think to check it. I only really used it last time we went to Disney World and for the most part, I just took pictures of my food. LOL Most of which, was foods that I need to avoid now, but I digress...

      :D

  3. With my blog I'm on all forms of social media. It takes a lot of time, effort and down right work but I enjoy it.
For my personal life, Facebook helps me keep up with friends and family far away.

    1. Yea, I can definitely see that you probably would need to utilize all the different forms! As long as you enjoy it and don't get overwhelmed, is the main thing!

  4. I love Facebook and am getting the hang of Twitter. I think there has to be a balance though with all of it. That's why I force myself to get offline some days. I work full time and train for running and have a boyfriend that requires extra help with a disability so I have to prioritize for sure.

  5. Hey Desiree!
Hang in there and take your time with the other forms of social media. If you rush in before you're ready, you will definitely overwhelm yourself.

I'm avid on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. I love them all! I am actually on Google +, too and am working my way to posting consistly on it, because the layout is just soooo pretty. I can't wait to become a pro!

Let me know if you have any questions, I'd love to help.

I do believe that it's important to be on different kinds of social media, because your readers will be all over the place, so you want to find a way to reach out to them beyond your blog.

    Hope this helps!

    1. Thanks for the offer, I may have to hit you up if I do have questions. I'm thinking I may step slightly into twitter, maybe even for just posting workouts and such. Not sure yet though :)

  6. I have a personal FB and one for my blog which I use often. I also have twitter for both but never use them except to broadcast my workouts that are linked and also when entering giveaways that require a tweet about them for an entry. I love Instagram so much!!!

    1. Yea, I guess I never really got the hang of twitter so I rarely tweet. I just use it to catch up on celebs mostly!

Do you take pics and share them on instagram? Or mostly follow others?

  8. I keep up with friends and family on Facebook, but I don't have FB accounts for my blogs. I LOVE Pinterest and use it mostly personally but I also promote blog posts on it. I don't have a Twitter account. I have Google + but don't really understand it. I also have a mostly dormant Instagram account. Phew, that IS a lot!

  9. I can SO relate to this! I have so many times where I think I'm not enough as a blogger (as if keeping a BLOG isn't enough anymore!). The problem is, I feel so behind the curve when it comes to social media, and especially gaining 'followers' - it's funny, I have NO problem putting myself out there in real life (and being super outgoing), but when it comes to putting my blog out there and asking people to follow it... I'm so timid! Also it doesn't help that I have no idea how to count how many people read my blog on wordpress. Still in the darkages when it comes to technology I guess.
I just always try to remind myself that the actual writing of the blog is what keeps me happy, and motivates me, and keeps me sane. All the other stuff is icing. So keep on doing what you're doing - I for one will keep reading!!

  10. I've tried a lot of different ones and Facebook is the only one that really stuck for me. I tried blogging for a bit and I just got too overwhelmed by not having time for it/ things to post about. Was VERY active on Twitter for awhile but found it more fun to follow some people than post. Tried Pintrest for awhile, still have my account, and think it's one of the easier ones to pick up and put down with zero obligation to be on it regularly. Tried Instagram but found their privacy settings to be hard to set (as in the link to make shit private never loaded for me). So, overall I feel like Facebook is the social media winner for me and as is I waste far too much time on there!
