Getting my head back in the game and Tatlock's Truth June Challenge

First off, thank you ALL for the kind words and emails after yesterday's post.  I'm doing a bit better and finally think I've got my head back on straight.   Yesterday was still pretty bad eating but I did manage a 30 minute walk and I know that always makes me feel better, and it did.

So these last 9 months of plateau have led me to the conclusion that I've learned how to maintain but now I need to get back to the basics I think.  I am ready to get back to losing weight, being accountable and HONEST with not only everyone, but myself too.  So, I am really thinking that I'm going to be linking up with Shannon and doing her June Challenge!


More info can be found on her blog post here but the basics are this:

1) Water: drink 3 liters of water/day (at minimum). Feel free to add sliced fruit to your water to give it flavor. Avoid pop and sugary drinks. (Allowed 1 pop/week.)   

Can you tell this lovely lady is Canadian?  heh heh  

2) Portion Control: Weigh your food and be aware of the portions that you are eating. Use smaller plates and bowls to trick your mind in to thinking you are eating more than you are.

3) Exercise: Exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes/6 days a week. It can be broken in to increments of 15 minutes and can be cardio or weight-lifting. You pick your poison.



This is easily do-able for me.

I am definitely going to be paying extra special attention to the portion control one and just add a few little addendum's for myself.

1. No alcohol at all for June.  Ya'll know I love my beer so this will be a challenge for sure and what's the point of a challenge if I don't up the ante.  So I'll be having a going away party for any beer that's left in my fridge today and tomorrow.
2. Weigh in every Wednesday - Yep, said I wasn't but I really need the accountability.  I had given up on the scale for so long now and apparently I wasn't doing any better going it alone, so, going back to it.
3. No snacks other than fruit or Larabars/Quest bars or protein shakes  (i.e. no crap - cookies, candy, chips.
4. Try to eat as clean as I possibly can.  I'm really going to try to focus on meal planning and cooking 90% of my meals.
5. No video games or netflix until I've completed my 30 minutes of exercise for the day.  Yea, if I sit down, the rest just won't happen, so this will help me get it out of the way first thing.

So that's my game plan to get back on track and hopefully shake things up a bit so this stupid weight will start coming off again.

Rain, rain go away

Y'all I have been struggling bad this past week and a half.  It's been a tough one.  And we finally started getting some much needed rain and now I'm ready for it to go away again even though it's supposed to stick around until Sunday. 

My food choices have just been bad lately.  I haven't even logged a couple of days into MFP even though I'm still checking into it each day for my streak. 

Exercise is virtually non-existent too.  I did manage a small walk on Tuesday but other than that, nothing.   Motivation has gone away completely.

Also still dealing with daughter stuff.  She just turned 20 on Tuesday and of course her friends are more important than we are.  For the first time in 20 years, I haven't seen her or physically talked to her (other than text) on her birthday.  That's got me in a super bad depressed state right now.  I worry about her so much and I know at some point she will come around but until then it's just hard.   I knew this week would be rough for me because of the issues we've been having and I was right.  I just didn't expect it to be THAT hard. 

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I'm still here.  I'll get back to it and get my mind right eventually.  I know that exercise will help, but tell me how to actually get out the door when all I want to do is lay on the couch drowning in potato chips.

Tennis update!

The YMCA tennis tournament ended for me yesterday!  I lost both of my matches.  Booo!   It's ok though, all in all for my very first tournament, I had fun!  And Singles are a whole different ball of wax than Doubles that's for sure, especially in the heat and humidity.  And I know once I get the rest of this weight off, it will only help me improve. 



Here's a small recap of my tennis week thus far -

Tuesday's match was against one of the ladies that I've done clinics with (actually both of my matches were), so I kinda knew going into it that I was going to be outmatched.  Tuesday we arranged to meet at 4:30 to play.  Now I usually get off work at 3:30, so I made sure to pack all my stuff and just leave straight from work.  I also grabbed a couple of tubes of sunscreen and they are now permanent fixtures in my tennis bag!   I also made sure I had a couple of Larabars on hand since I knew Tuesday was going to be a long night (Singles match, and then last night for Sets in the City league).

When I got out of my car, this is what the temp read:


As with my running, I always try to sat at least don't come in dead last (which as you know, I've become a master at doing just that..see here and here) So my mantra for tennis was to just at least win one game.  (Tennis goes like this - game, set then match) so I at least wanted to see at least a number on the board.   Well my first match against Alison wasn't meant to be.  She is REALLY good!   I lost both sets: 6-0, 6-0.   Ah well. 

After our match, I went to the car to blast the A/C and try to cool off for a bit before Sets in The City started. 


I finally walked back over to the Tennis Center and waited for everyone to get there.  Once they did, Ronnie divided everyone up with partners and we went on to play our matches.  This time around I got matched with Carryn and we won our match 6-4, 6-2!  She is a net monster!  Plus she's really tall so not much gets past her! LOL   It was fun to end the league on that note.  Afterwards, our local USTA representative had an after party at Rotollo's restaurant so we all went there once our matches were finished.   Most of the group was really sad that the league was over and we questioned, "what was next".   Well, Ronnie and the USTA rep said, next you guys can start leagues and such.  A lot of the people bemoaned that and felt not quite ready so, we are going to get 5 more weeks of instruction/training/gameplay with the same set of people!    I think I'm going to do this again with the same group.  A lot of us are all on the same level (as in, not quite ready to get super duper involved in league play and still want some basic training and understanding of the game).  With all the clinics and lessons that I do, at some point, I know I'll need to move on to that next stage too but I really like this group so I think I'll stick it out with them rather than get thrown into the fire!

After all of Tuesday's tennis, I decided to give myself a rest on Wednesday (plus after a long night of tennis, I usually have a pretty bad P.F. flare up the next day as was the case on Wed.)

Thursday morning I was able to set up a match with my next opponent, Marianna for 5:00 that evening.  At first, I thought it wasn't going to be too bad out, it seemed like it was slightly overcast even though it was in the upper 80s but the humidity was in full force.  This match was REALLY tough.  The heat just wears you down so fast.   The match started out way lopsided, she was up 5 games really quickly because I kept making stupid mistakes (why can't they let us use Doubles lines in Singles?! heh heh)  but I FINALLY got my nerves shaken off and started actually connecting with some shots.  I eventually got 4 games in a row and we were at 5-4.  Then of course, stupid mistakes came back and I lost that last game so the first set went down at 6-4.

The next set was pretty dismal.  The heat was really getting to me I think and even though we were drinking plenty of water, it was just exhausting.   I lost that set 6-1.


The good news is that, I definitely played much better this time around.  I made a couple of really good shots when it counted. and we actually had several deuces and it went back and forth several more times.  I think once I get over my nervousness of playing against other people, and get my confidence up, I can really see myself improving.

After that match ended we were supposed to have a Stroke of the Month clinic but no one showed up for it.  It's just as well because I was really tired and drained after the match.  I was going to tell Ronnie anyway that I was done for the day but he beat me to it.

One things for sure, WHEN I get the rest of this weight off, I will be a good tennis player....eventually!

Weekend Rewind and Weekly Recap






Yep.  Bad week all around.

Here's the recap.

Monday - 32 minutes running; 60 minutes walking; 60 minutes bowling (not pictured)
Tuesday - sick
Wednesday - sick
Thursday - partially sick but then I felt better, so 60 minutes of tennis
Friday - 30 minutes walking; 30 seconds running - (P.F. flare up, this was supposed to be a full run)
Saturday - 2 hours 11 minutes tennis
Sunday - rest

So between being sick a few days and the ole Plantar Faciitis flare ups, it was not a great week for exercise.

The good - I still did something on a few days where I probably otherwise wouldn't have (Monday & Thursday)
The bad - Only 1 run
The ugly - A big ole goose egg on the weights

Food was probably about 75% for the week.  I stayed mostly within calorie range but there was definitely some moments of weakness here and there. 

Despite last week being craptastic, the weekend was pretty awesome!   Friday night, we just caught up on some dvr stuff (Cosmos, Hannibal - ****Spoiler alert***** "Mason Verger dog kibble coming soon!" heh).

Saturday I was on the fence about going to play tennis or not but ultimately decided to give it a whirl.  The foot was feeling better at that point.   Earlier that morning, also, my friend John called and asked if we could play some tennis later, I said "but of course" and got him to meet me at the courts right after clinic ended.  Clinic was dismal! I swear it was like I wasn't awake or something.  Nothing was working right, shots were just missing the mark.  It was pathetic.  I did a bit better playing with John (as evidenced with the 2nd pic..)





We only played one set though.  It was hot and I was getting really tired.
During clinic though, our instructor (who is very persuasive...) talked me into joining the local YMCA club championship tournament.  Um so, yea, I'm SCARED!  I play my first round match (there are only 5 of us.. and it's singles) tomorrow at 4:30, (Sets in the City league is at 6:30) so that's a lot of tennis!  If you think about it, send some good tennis juju vibes my way.  I'm really nervous.  Also we are supposed to pick our "official" partners for Sets in The City tomorrow and begin our final tournament play for the league.   My inner elementary school kickball player, is secretly praying that I don't get picked last....

After clinic, I went home and showered, then Chris and I ran a few errands and got our groceries.  I was determined to meal plan the heck out of this week, and I did.. I knew that I have a possible lot of tennis on my plate this week between Sets in The City, the tournament and just normal clinics.  We also hit up the Fruit and Veggie Stand again.


The rest of Saturday was us playing Diablo 3.  Nothing exciting.

Sunday, I got up fairly early, cleaned the house, caught up on laundry, meal prepped and I even washed and separated all my fruit for the week.  I never do that. I grab grapes normally by the stalk and shove them into a ziplock bag out the door.  This little practice is usually what causes me to be late to work in the mornings.  I was determined to have all my fruit and for the week ready for once.  I got all my bananas, grapes, oranges and strawberries portioned out for all 5 days.   I'd love to be able to continue doing this because so far it's worked out well and I actually made it to work on time today!  (You had no idea that fruit is the single cause of my work lateness, did you?) 

After all that, (Oh I did mow the grass too!), we relaxed, watched some Star Wars, played and finished Diablo on our characters in normal mode, and then rewatched a few episodes of Coupling on netflix, then finally watched Game of Thrones last night.  And just so you don't think Chris is a lazy bum, he was studying and trying to learn a programming language so I let him slide on helping me with housework this weekend.  Plus I get most of it done while he's still sleeping anyway (he normally handles the bills, cooking, and yard work, and I usually handle just about everything else - it works for us!  We always grocery shop together.)

Freaky Friday

This week has been cray cray for me.  I'll explain more on my weekly wrap up on Monday but basically it started out like this.  Saturday night/Sunday - sick,  Monday - better but still "off", Tuesday - normal, Wednesday and half of Thursday - Montezuma's revenge happened (except that I wasn't in Mexico..), Friday - Plantar Faciitis reared its ugly head.

So this week has downright sucked.  There really is no other word for it.

And let's not even talk about my eating this week.  Ugh.

Yesterday afternoon I finally felt normal for the first time since Saturday morning so I decided to go ahead and go to Tennis (forehand) clinic.  I did well there, no problems at all....

And it was a beautiful day and gorgeous weather!

Until I woke up this morning and the P.F. hit me full force.  I haven't had a bad flare up like this in a long while.  I actually woke up with my running alarm for once and wanted to head out the door and get a run in.  It wasn't meant to be.  About 30 seconds in and after every time my foot struck down, I was dealing with some pretty bad pain so I opted to walk it.  Walking wasn't nearly as bad as the running.

So hoping this clears up.  I'm going to take it easy for the rest of the day today and then re-evaluate each day (I do not want to miss tennis tomorrow!  We had a rain out Tuesday so if I miss tomorrow that means I've only played once this week! BOOO).  Frozen water bottles are going to be my bff this weekend.  Just when I get back into a good flow with running and don't despise it.    So. Damn. Frustrated. 

Maybe I need to go back to Physical Therapy again?  Maybe that'll spur hubby onto coming with me for his shoulder. 

Hopefully Doctor Doyle will be at my beck and call this weekend

Non-Weigh In Wednesday

Weigh In Wednesday  

This is going to be an all-over-the-place brain dump since I really have nothing at all to report!  Booo!

Scale is still a no-go.  Plus my eating has been "off" since the whole stomach fiasco.  After barely eating anything Sunday, I seem to not be able to turn anything away and I'm starving all the time it feels like.  So yea, not even going to think about the scale right now.  Plus I think T.O.M. is right around the corner and that may also have something to do with feeling as ravenous as a T-Rex at a goat buffet.

Tennis got cancelled last night.  It poured for like 10 minutes but I guess it was enough to cancel.  I was bummed about that.  This is probably our 2nd to last league play.  They wanted us to start thinking of a partner who we'd like to pair up with going into the last 2 weeks.  I always get nervous about that (fear of getting picked last - even though I am kinda athletic, I'm just not that good). 


I'm starting to watch the Tennis Channel like ALL the time.  When there isn't anything on tv, I go straight to the tennis channel.  I'm thinking that I'm becoming obsessed.  I want to play all the time.  I even found a game app.  Is this how runners who love to run feel?  Cause the way I love tennis is not the way I love running and I know there are people out there who love it.  I can't seem to find very many that feel that way about tennis?  Hmm.  Interesting.  If you love tennis, tell me.  I want to geek out with you!

So I totally slept in this morning and missed my run.  I may try to go after work tonight if the weather is ok.  If it isn't, I'll have to go run boring laps in the boring gym at the Y.    Although it is supposed to be really nice in the morning.  Maybe I'll run tonight AND tomorrow.  Back to the morning stuff,  I still am only managing to get up about once per week and do it early.   As it gets hotter, I will really need to make an effort to just get up and do it.  I already have 2 alarms set as it is that I manage to snooze through.

I'm really glad that I picked back up with watching Agents of Shield again.  They've really turned it up a notch.  I gave up on it probably about 6 episodes in and then a co-worker convinced me right around the time of Captain America to start it up again.  I'm glad I did!  The finale was so good!   I'm glad that the show is getting better.

Weekly rewind and weekly recap

Why do the weekends go by so very fast?!

How was your weekend?  Did y'all have a good one?  Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there, whether you have the 2 legged kind or the 4 legged ones!

I put together a little photo collage of my kid, Devyn.


My weekend started out wonderful but ended up being not so good.  More on that in a sec.  Let's knock out the Good, the Bad and the Ugly first.

The good - Ran for 20 minutes straight this morning.  Also got complimented at tennis clinic about my racquet speed and my forehand!

The bad - Only 2 runs and only 2 weight trainings

The ugly - Stomach virus, nausea and (tmi) vomiting for Mother's Day....yay...    Ugh felt miserable.  I woke Chris up as I was in tears around 1 am Sunday.  Throwing up is like the worst thing ever for me.  I hate it so much.  And then having to do it more than once.  Ugh.   So needless to say, it was a very unpleasant Mother's Day.  Dev was feeling under the weather too, so I just told her that we'd try again maybe next weekend to hang out.

I could tell that yesterday's stomach-palooza issues affected my run this morning.  Of course, I could be a tad bit dehydrated too and then the 91% humidity this morning didn't help but I still managed to get my running mile in and then some.  I set out with a goal this morning of trying to run for 20 minutes straight.  During that first mile, I wasn't sure if I was even going to be able to do it but then I had to have a self pep talk.  I know I can run a mile straight now.   So it may not have been as fast as I have ran lately, but it's better than nothing!  Once I hit the 20 minute mark, I walked the rest to total 2 miles.  (It looked like I ran 20 minutes last week but that was a run/walk)

As "slow" as a 14 minute mile is, that's still much faster than when I first started!

Speaking of miles.  I am way way behind on my 100 mile challenge.  My co-worker and I decided to stop walking at lunch and on breaks because it's already getting so hot here and that is really putting a damper on my mileage.   See...

And I have roughly 2 and  a half weeks to try to make up the difference.  I may try to walk indoors at work.  The problem is that my phone gps doesn't work inside.  So what I may end up doing is going back and looking at my mile times and averaging it out between about 5 of them.  Then walk for that allotted amount of time that I usually walk and the use that average mileage.  Does that sound fair?

Despite Sunday, Chris and I had a nice weekend.  We are almost caught up with The Guild on netflix (and that show is so much funnier now that I'm several years removed from my World of Warcraft days...).  And we played some Borderlands 2 and Diablo on the PS3.  Good stuff for a lazy and rainy weekend.

NSV Thursday!

So I was way to excited to wait until Thursday to post about my NSV this week and I posted one on Monday.

So in addition to that one, I do have another NSV to share!

On Tuesday, I was looking through my closet and trying to figure out what to wear.  I grabbed a shirt that I had bought around last October.  It was on the sale rack and there was only one size "Large" so I had hoped that I could fit into it soon.  Once I got home I realized that it was a "Petite" large.  So needless to say, it would be a while before I could wear it.  Over the last few months I kept trying it on just to see if it would fit.  It never did. 

Until Tuesday.

This was pre-makeup so no face shot.

It buttoned!  A little gap in the boob area but I will be able to wear it soon!  (I decided not to wear it to work that day though... because sitting and getting up and down may cause additional pressure on those buttons so I figured I'll just wait a bit longer until it really fits me properly!)

So, lesson here is this.  The scale may not be moving, but inches are definitely coming off!

I'm very pleased with the difference especially since last month!

So I totally did a bad thing and I peeked at the scale this morning just because it was Wednesday.  I was down at one point to a new all time low (186.0 - last weekend) but then this morning here we go and I'm back up to 188.6.  UGH.   Needless to say, the scale is going back into hiding.   If the inches are coming off, why isn't the scale cooperating!?  So. Damn. Frustrating. 

Anyway....

I had a great time at tennis last night!  I think we only have about 2 more weeks left in this league.  I hope they start up another beginners league after this.  I'm starting to find myself wanting to play all the time.  I'm still trying to talk Mr. Skinny Geek into going to the dang doctor about his shoulder.   It will be nice to have my Justice League partner back.

Well that's about all that I have for today.  This afternoon's plan is to run (kicking myself for not going this morning.. I totally could have and should have but didn't).  Instead slept in before I had to go and do my blood work (for last week's physical).  I think I needed the rest I guess.

NSV....Monday and sports bra nirvana

2 posts in one day!  Whaaaat!?!?

Too excited to wait until Thursday to share this one!  I've lamented before about Women's sizes and how shitty they are but not about the special personal hell that is a Sports/Athletic store and you are a larger person.  There is nothing more depressing than seeing loads and loads of cute little outfits that you can't possibly fit into much less look like a stuffed sausage when actually wearing them.

One of our errands Saturday was making a stop at our local Academy Sports and Outdoors shop since I needed some new protein powder for my smoothies.  I've been thinking about getting a few tank tops now, since my arms are starting to get small(er) and that I don't want the ever popular farmer's tan that I would get by just wearing t-shirts or wicking shirts all the time.   So I decided to browse around the clothes section.  I saw a color and style that I liked so picked up the XL.  It was too big!  I can't believe it either!

I went back and grabbed the Large size and went back into the dressing room, thinking there was no way.

A little tight in the boob area, but it otherwise fit!  You betcha I bought that!

After stopping at Academy, we knocked out a few more errands and then stopped at Target for our weekly grocery trip.  I decided to pop into the Activewear area after mentioning to Chris that I needed/wanted a better sports bra.  (I looked at Academy but they were really expensive).  And came across this one:
It's the C9 by Champion Women's Medium Support Molded cup bra and I gave it a whirl on my run this morning.  The reviews were "iffy" on the website, but I have to tell you, that I LOVE this bra!  It kept my girls from jiggling too much when running plus it was super duper comfy.  I told Chris, this morning that I want to go and buy all the colors now! 

Oh and disclaimer time, Target did not pay me for this review (although they should as much as I shop there!)

Weekend rewind and weekly recap

Happy Cinco De Mayo everyone!



Hope you all had a good week and a even better weekend!  We sure did!  Nothing ruins your weekend like a Monday, eh?

Alrighty let me knock out last weeks recap first.

Overall had a pretty good week I'd say. 

The good - I WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I won! I actually beat someone!  My best friend John (who is also losing weight too but since he's a boy he loses easily) decided to start throwing some tennis into his routine too and since Thursday night's clinic was cancelled for me and I still wanted to get some in, I gave him a call.  He jumped at the chance.  John is pretty semi-athletic by nature so I wasn't sure how this was going to go at first.  And he is a newbie to actual tennis, I think once he gets his shots down and works on his form a bit, he will be tough to beat.  But for now, I claim this victory!

The bad - only 2 runs this week.

The ugly - Only ONE day of weights.  Must do better with this.

Food was about 85% this week.  I actually ate out twice this week and both times, made smart choices (grilled fish and a baked potato at both restaurants each time), which is much better than what I'd normally get at this places (one was a ribs place the other was a seafood restaurant).  And I really consider this a huge victory... work was giving away Krispy Kreme donuts today.  In case you didn't really understand the sentence.. I PASSED UP KRISPY KREME DONUTS!   I truly did!  That is a major accomplishment for me.  Now if I survive the rest of the week, we will be good.  We are having employee appreciation week here at work.

Oh and I meal prepped like a fiend Sunday too.  I have 6 lemon pepper chicken with carrot meals, 2 breaded chicken meals and 6 spaghetti meals.  We should not even have to cook unless we want to this week!

The weekend was really nice and the weather was perfect!  After work Friday, the whole family got together with some friends sprinkled in to celebrate my aunt's retirement!  We went out to a local seafood restaurant and had a really nice time!  Saturday, got up, went to the gym since tennis clinic was also cancelled for the weekend due to a tournament my Y was hosting.  So went to the gym instead and glad I got it in. 

After the gym, I came home and showered and Chris and I went and ran some errands.  I do have a NSV that happened while we were out and about that I'll share with you guys in a separate post!  After making a few stops (haircuts), we decided to check out a fruit stand since the last few times I've gotten grapes, they've been bad.  Plus I'm trying really hard to eat more fruits and veggies so I wanted to stock up.



We will for sure be doing this more often I think.  They had a wonderful selection and I couldn't leave without spying my favorite jelly of all time (and I rarely get it!), Wild Muscidine jelly!  Yay!  Also scored some grapes, bananas, potatoes and Louisiana strawberries!  After the produce market, we knocked out the grocery shopping then went home.  The rest of the weekend was doing a few things around the house (mowing the lawn, cleaning stuff, laundry, etc.) and then just vegging out as much as we could.  Chris and I played a good bit of Borderlands 2.  We just started playing again and love that game!


Oh I also celebrated Star Wars Day in appropriate fashion yesterday...
