Fit Geek Friday - Let The Games Begin!

Today's topic is "Let The Games Begin!"

My gaming history started back when my dad brought home a shiny new Atari 2600 in 1982.   I spent many, many hours playing games like Centipede, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Breakout, Space Invaders and Combat.

From there, I started hitting up the arcades.  I spent much of my time begging my parents for quarters and therefore a nickname was born of "Quarter Pounder".  Fun fact - that was also my C.B. handle back in the 80s too.  My dad thought it would be fun to let me chat with his C.B. buddies back then.  My parents bowled regularly on a few bowling leagues so I spent loads of time playing various arcade games at the bowling alley.  Now, Chris and I always make a point to spend some time at Disney Quest each time we go to Orlando for a vacation.   A nice little way to relive our childhood and play some games of our youth.

Eventually my gaming progressed to being obsessed with the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Mario Bros., Burger Time.  My absolute most favorite game ever of this era was Bubble Bobble though.

There is a lull in time here because that's when I started playing sports in middle school and high school and also starting socializing outside the house.  Oh and when I discovered boys.  Back then it definitely wasn't cool for girls to play.

I didn't really get back into gaming that much until I  had my daughter.  Around the age of 3 for her,  my then husband and I got a Sega Genesis.  And with it a few games that Devyn would like (mainly Toy Story... she was obsessed with playing that game!) so Dev and I spent a lot of time playing a few video games.  Around this time of course, ex and I were about to become exes for realsies so I didn't really start playing anything again until I met and started dating Chris.

Chris and I met in August of 2000.   By Christmas he was basically kinda sorta living with me.  As a Christmas gift for us he bought a Playstation 2.  He literally stalked the poor mail man until the moment it arrived.  I knew at that moment (and among other things) that I had met the man I was meant to be with.  Oh the gaming that we did!  Anything and everything. Gauntlet, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, etc..  Oh and Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds.   Not long after we bought Devyn a gamecube.  She was and still is obsessed with Pikman!  After the PS2 and GameCube, we briefly got an XBox but that didn't last too long.  We are Playstation people through and through!

Around this time we started playing World of Warcraft and did so for about 3 years.  I still do love that game but oh my word is it addicting.   So many nights, weekends, immediately after work and before work, I would log in "just to check" to make sure auctions went well, or to do a little farming.  WoW consumed every bit of our lives for a while there and also was pretty detrimental to my diet.  During our WoW days is where I gained the most weight in my adult life.  It wasn't until I quit WoW that I realized how poorly we were treating ourselves and that's when changes slowly started happening in my lifestyle.  But back to the gaming aspect, I played mostly Paladin characters or Warriors.  Chris always plays a rogue (no matter what game).  Devyn, I think, was a Druid.

Also we played a couple more pc based games during this era too.  Mainly The Sims (1-3). 

And now that brings us to present day. 

We only have a PS3 and a PS4 now.  Our poor little laptop won't hold any computer games either. Since the dawn of streaming content, our game time has worn down to just a few hours on the weekends.  Chris and I do play a good bit of Minecraft  and Diablo III together.  Solo lately, Chris tends to go with Destiny and I usually like to play DragonAge: Inquisition.

We also find time to play board games and role playing from time to time such as Munckin or pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons.


But.. what's different now versus how it all was before.  Yes, I do still play, but my first priority isn't the game itself but make sure that I am taken care of first before the playstation is even turned on.  I get my workout done or I don't play.   Simple as that!

Weigh In Wednesday

Weigh In Wednesday  

Quickie W.I.W. here since I have a dentist appointment in a bit.

Let's just rip the ole band-aid off, shall we?


Yea, a gain of a pound.  BUT I'm actually not that upset about it.  Because I took a sneaky look on Friday last week and I was up (!!!) to 204.  Since Sunday though, I have been really diligent with food and exercise.  I've been logging everything in MFP and exercising consistently (around 1500 cal per day).   I finally feel like I'm mostly back.  I've got a couple of things to tweak but I'm feeling much better about my effort at least. 


One thing about being on a league (practicing - we haven't started match play yet) and fitting in your normal tennis clinics and such is that I'm burning a ton of calories!



And in between I'm trying to put more effort in at the gym with balancing things out on the elliptical and with weights.  I even bought myself some weightlifting gloves.  I feel all professional now.  :)



Also back to meal prepping regularly too.  Especially with such a busy schedule, it's absolutely necessary for me to do this so I don't resort to eating fast food between work and tennis.

Fit Geek Friday - Geek Fitness Female Inspirations

I'm participating again in the Fit Geek Friday Linkup and thought I'd share with you guys some of my Kick-Ass Geeky Female inspirations!  These are the ladies that I strive to be like both mentally and physically and have been a source for inspiration for me before and during my journey.  So hope you enjoy these!

1. Michonne from The Walking Dead


Sure, Daryl Dixon is awesome, but my choice for the buddy system in the zombie apocalypse is hands down, Michonne.  She is strong and brave and not afraid to whip out a Katana at a moments notice to dismember a zombie.  Plus she has killer arms.  (You'll sense a theme here with arms shortly).

2.  Daenerys Targaryan from Game of Thrones


Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons.

And she is proven herself to be quite a leader and a conqueror too!

3. Agent Peggy Carter from Captain America and Marvel's Agent Carter


Agent Carter is by no means a damsel in distress, waiting for Cap to come and rescue her.  Homegirl can hold her own.  AND she seriously rocks a red hat!  I am loving every single thing about this series.  And I'm a total 1940s fangirl. I love everything 40s so this is just my favorite show currently on television.

4.  Eowyn from Lord of the Rings


She showed such bravery at the Battle of Pelennor Fields in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.  But, she ended up with Faramir so she looses awesome points for that (because I claimed Faramir, so that counts right?)

5. Sarah Connor from Terminator 2


Sarah transformed herself between the first movie from a timid woman to a bonafide badass.  Those arms.  I can't even handle it.  I want my arms to look like Sarah Connor's.

6. River Tam from Firefly and Serenity


Ok if you haven't watched Firefly and then Serenity, then go do so.  Under no circumstances are you to watch Serenity first.  You will be very upset if you do.  It will only take about 16 hours and it is my mission in life to get everyone I know of (and that means, you fellow bloggers!) to watch these amazing episodes/movie.  And while doing do, pay special attention to the evolution of River Tam.  You wouldn't think it from the first episode of Firefly but she will become one of the most revered characters from the series and subsequent movie.  And boy does she shine.  Er, should I say. She is just shiny.

7.  Wonder Woman


I loved every single thing about Diana Prince right down to my Wonder Woman underoos.    Now, granted I need to go back and re-watch this series but from what I can remember, I loved it!    And she can deflect bullets.  That's pretty darn awesome in my book.

8. Ellen Ripley from Alien, Aliens (and I don't count the other 2).


Ripley is hands down one of my all time favorite characters and she was one of the first female heroines that wasn't overshadowed by anyone.  Ripley is a survivalist and also a realist.

9.  Zoe Washburne from Firefly/Serenity



Joss Whedon is a master at making such strong female characters.  Here's another example from Firefly/Serenity.   (Have you watched it yet?)   Zoe is a soldier, a first mate on a spaceship, a wife and a fighter.  She is fiercely loyal to her friends and to her husband.

10.  The Bride from Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2


As far as revenge flicks go, this is probably my all time favorite.  Beatrix Kiddo slices her enemies who have wronged her and gets sweet revenge along the way.  It was such a fun ride and such determination and perseverance to see the evolution of her revenge plotted out.

11. Buffy Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer


And last but certainly not least is my all time favorite television show  and character.  Who knew that a move that was so terrible would be given a second chance on television (and eventually in comics)!  This show literally blew me away.  I turned full on nerd when I discovered this show.  Yes, sure I loved Star Wars in the 70s and 80s but this show is what turned me full geek and I have never looked back.  The story lines, the writing, the acting, just everything about this show was amazing and ahead of it's time.    Buffy loved hard, she played hard and she trained hard.  Plus, she saved the world.  A lot.

Weigh In Wednesday


I'm really trying to get my head back in the game here.  I've felt like my food has been better but not quite where I need it to be.  I also know that activity has been wishy-washy lately.  I did get in some good exercise, but not as consistently as I would have liked.  So with all that being said, I knew that this weigh in was not going to be pretty.


That's a gain of +3 in two weeks time.  Now granted, I didn't "officially" weigh in last week.  But I did peek at the scale and I'm at least down from that awful number.  But that doesn't mean that I'm pleased with this weigh in.  I'm not.  At all.

So yea, I need to get back on track (again).  Consistency and logging.  I know what I need to do, now to just implement it.

Back to activity.  I've had several days of tennis with all the practicing we are starting to do for our team and so far everything is going good!  I think I underestimated how much actual work being a captain is.  I do have help now so that's a relief at least.  But there's a lot of reading, learning the rules, ordering balls (home teams supply the tennis balls for each match), organizing, etc.  Anyway, it's a lot of work!  But so far it's still been fun!  This is the activity that I've been doing lately.




Other than that, I've been trying a few new recipes lately and this one came out really good!  I can't remember where I saw it first but here's a link.   It was the Crock Pot Balsamic Pork.

Fit Geek Friday

I guess a little introduction is in order since this is my first time with this link up!


I'm Desiree' and have been trying to get fit and healthy since November of 2012.  I'm down roughly 50ish pounds since then.  I've gained about 14 back since November so I'm trying to get back on track once more.  My main activity of choice is tennis!  I started taking some lessons in September of 2013 and have been hooked ever since!  I love trying to constantly improve my game and recently joined a tennis league that is starting up soon.  I play about 3-4 times a week.  In between tennis, I like to walk or go to the gym and get on the elliptical and binge watch nerdy stuff.  I'm trying to re-watch Doctor Who on netflix (only at the gym!) before it goes away.  My treat for going is to get to watch an episode or so.   Once I finish Doctor Who I think I may rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer next. 

In my non-active times, I'm a huge Marvel fangirl.  My favorite is Captain America and more recently Guardians of the Galaxy.  I'm also a huge Superman fan while hubby is more into Batman.  Mr. Skinny Geek and I also play a lot of playstation games as well as tabletop D & D and Munchkin from time to time.  I'm also a recovering WoW addict, haha.  We also love to attend local Cons when we can and collect items for our Nerd Cabinet (soon to be expanded to the Nerd room!).  I'm also a huge movie buff so I'm always looking to watch as many films as I can.

I try to incorporate my geeky side as much as I can when I'm being active.

A non weigh-in on a W.I.W.


Hey guys!

I'm opting out of today's weigh in portion of the linkup today.  I got home way way too late from the Tennis Captain's meeting last night and we ended up just reheating some pizza.    I knew the combination of eating so late and pizza would not be in my favor on the scale today so I'm abstaining at least for this week.

The captain's meeting went well!  I have so much information that I have to go over though and then schedule practices, organize matches and substitutes, etc.  It will be a lot of work but hopefully it will be rewarding at least!   The matches will start on February 24th so we have a little over a month to practice and evaluate where everyone stands and then work on strategy.  I personally like this approach -


We are having our first semi-informal practice tonight after work.  It's currently 37º here in South Louisiana.  It may be a very quick practice!

In other news, since my migraine on Sunday, I have not folded a stitch of laundry in about a week and a half.  We are living out of piles.  And I had to hurry and prep some lunches Monday between work and bowling.  I decided to try an experiment because I didn't go to the grocery store either last weekend so had to basically just scrounge around and make do with what we had available.   I had some chicken breasts that I thawed, put a pat of butter on each, then sprinkled some dry ranch dressing packet and then coated in breadcrumbs and baked at 375º for an hour.  Surprisingly they came out really good!  I'm all about quick and easy and it really can't get any easier than that.  I'll definitely put that meal into the rotation!

Today is really the first day that I haven't felt totally discombobulated with diet and exercise and if I can actually string a couple of good days together, then maybe I'll feel like my head is 100% back in the game.  I've already managed a walk on my morning break and hope to hit one on my afternoon one as well.  Also with the tennis tonight, that will be a A+ on the exercise front and so far so good with the food.  We are planning on baking tilapia tonight (whoever of us that gets home first will start cooking) and some healthy-ish sides too.  Also water is going well.  I'm on #3, which should put me at about 48oz. so far.


In other news, I bought a t-shirt to support my former High School, (that the diocese is closing) and I'm none to impressed with the placing of the paw prints...
